India vs England 2nd Test: Preview

Trent Bridge, July 29: India are fast approaching a moment of truth: are they worthy of holding the tag of the Number 1 ranked Test team in the world? Or are they generous enough to concede that title to the challengers England? The indications at the Lord's encounter a few days back is that a new world order is in the offing with England have skinned India's derriere in the opening match of the tour. But the right answer awaits on the hitherto calm surface of Trent Bridge, Nottingham where India are all let lock horns with a fired-up English side.
So what if the Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan is as yet convalescing from injury and won't be able to lead the Indian attack? The left-arm pace spearhead anyway didn't have all that fruitful a time when he first went scalp-hunting on this ground in 2002. Indeed, he returned mediocre figures (by his usually high standards) of 3/110 in the encounter. A cause for this drop in performance was the fact that Nottingham was clearly conducive for batsmen. Why even Harbhajan Singh managed to notch up a quick-fire half-century in the first innings.
Thus, the strip at Trent Bridge is well-suited to the reams of batting prowess and experience that India possesses in their ranks. Going by the adage "old is gold", India has a right jewellery shop of a middle-order with a trio of pedigree batsmen in the current squad - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid an VVS Laxman - having all played and excelled here 9 years ago.
I order to play to their strength, they will have to fortify themselves from the exposure of the all-too blatant chinks in their armour. Thus, Dravid will have to temper his propensity to poke outside the off-stump, Laxman will have to ensure that timing remains an integral part of his otherwise attractive stroke-play and Sachin will have to ditch the defending and play a his drive-based natural game. Whatever India can garner from the shaky opening combination of new-comer Abhinav Mukund and Gautam Gambhir will be a bonus.
Meanwhile, Indian pacemen Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma have demonstrated tremendous potential, but now will have to make no bones about tapping the same. There won't be much seam to exploit and with weather forecast at Nottingham looking bright, moisture too might elude them. So they had best take a leaf out of the potent English pace attack and bowl with more consistency and verve.
Dhoni would be better off reposing faith in his premier bowlers, instead of pulling out maverick stunts like bringing himself on to bowl. The clumsy fielding from the visitors too will have to disappear out the window, lest the robust English batting line-up be let off the hook to dish out their bloated partnerships. India will no-doubt be training their guns against the likes of Kevin Pietersen Jonathan Trott, but must simultaneously aim to nip defiant ripostes from the latter order in the bud.
All in all, India have a chance to stick it to a pumped up English side and come out tops in this crucial second Test....

Verify your tax details online at Income Tax India, TIN and bank websites

With just two weeks left to file the income tax returns, many taxpayers are busy making their final calculations, visiting their tax consultant and filling up the returns form. Before filing the tax forms, you need to deposit the balance tax due and interest, if any. This amount is based on your tax liability for the year, after taking into account advance tax paid and tax deducted at source.

Of late, the scope of tax deduction at source has been increased and includes salary, rent, interest, professional services etc. So, while preparing the tax returns and calculating the tax liability, you should take into account the tax amount already deducted on your behalf. Now, an easy way to do this is to refer to the 26AS statement. This statement is accessible on the NSDL site and is also available online on the websites of many banks.

According to a recent advice issued by the Income Tax Department, taxpayers should review their 26AS statements to check whether all the TDS deducted is appearing against their accounts or not. This would facilitate faster processing of refunds, if any.

Captain America: The First Avenger is this week's most ridiculous trailer

There's an element of slavish worship to any superhero myth, but that's particularly true for Captain America, a WWII-era propaganda comic that took a sickly young man who just really wanted to fight those damn Nazis and made him into the pinnacle of the American ideal -- which is, of course, a 'roided up war-machine in a red-white-and-blue lycra suit. Now, because interminable, ambiguous wars with no clear objective are for pussies, we are privileged to welcome back the Cap'n into our popular consciousness equipped with Adolf Hitler as his foil -- every hero needs a villain, after all, and plus, comic-book-origin flicks are totally hot right now with nostalgic Gen-Xers, all of whom are expected to walk out of theaters and immediately vote Republican.

It's hard to argue that, like pretty much every cinematic effort Marvel has been cranking out for the last decade or so, Captain America: The First Avenger looks like a pretty engaging flick. But it's also hard to argue that it lays on the nationalism pretty thick -- the "new breed of super-soldier" thing actually comes off pretty sinister within the context of the ensuing years of American warfare. But then again, Captain America is not exactly inviting us to consider the context, either.

Where this trailer gets bizarrely fetishistic, though, is right about at its halfway point -- at exactly 1:28, in fact, when our spunky hero emerges from his not-so-subtle cocoon like he just spent the last year at Goldberg's Gym. Did the tech guy just check him out under his shades like he was 2 Live Crew at the beach? Yes, he did, and as we all know, that means only one thing: Captain America is about to start getting all the chicks.
