National Pancake Day: History and 2011 Celebrations

March 1 has been declared as National Pancake Day 2011 aside from being Justin Bieber’s birthday. However, you should know that the date always varies every year because it is usually the day before Ash Wednesday.

Other terms for National Pancake Day are Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras. The day is highlighted with celebrations of eating food rich in sugar and fat such as of course, pancake because the day after is the beginning of Lent and the season for fasting for many religions.

For National Pancake Day 2011 in the United States, IHOP is giving away free “short stack” of their pancakes if you will make a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other charities.

In France and most French-speaking countries, they eat king cakes instead of pancakes. While other countries have their own sweet pastries which they eat during this day for Shrovetide.
