Kerala Budget Presentation 2011-12 Begins

Palayam, Trivandrum: The last budget of the current VS Achuthanandan government is being presented by finance minister Dr. Thomas Issac at the Kerala State Legislative Assembly here.

The new budget is expected to give thrust to infrastructure development in the state.

The minister began the presentation with a short poem by Janpith Award Winner ONV Kurup. Interestingly, Issac is only the second finance minister in the state, after T Sivadasa Menon of EK Nayanar cabinet (1996-2001), to present all the budgets in a five-year tenure of the state assembly.

With the elections around the corner, the new budget promises to be something to look forward to.

Along with five public sector undertaking to be set up in the state, about Rs. 40,000 crores has been announced for road development.

The minister has promised to complete the works of the newly proposed Kannur airport within the next two years and an amount of Rs. 10 crore has been approved for it.

With the announcement of a bypass package of Rs. 1,000 crores for basic infrastructure development, the state roads would get a new shine.

Added to this, 36 state roads are to be made two-lane, and the implementation of Poovar-Ponnani coastal road has also been announced

  • Rs. 1000 cr bypass package will be implemented, of which Trivandrum to get Rs. 250 cr.
  • Rs. 2,296 crores allocated for Higher Education in the state
  • Rs. 15 cr for land acquisition for Kannur airport; Kannur airport would be completed within 2 years
  • Rs. 186 cr. for Kochi Metro
  • Rs. 420 cr. for Poovar - Ponnanni coastal highway
  • Rs. 142 Thrissur package
  • Rs. 14 for procurement of rice
  • Rs. 10 cr for Alappuzha master plan
  • Rs. 102 cr for land acquisition for IT park
  • Rs. 105 cr for tourism
  • Rs. 50 cr for Keltron
  • Rs. 5 cr for KTDC hotels at Alappuzha and Kozhikode
  • Rs. 1 cr for museums
  • Rs. 10 crore allotted for Kannur airport
  • Rs. 761 cr for Ponnani port
  • Rs. 25 cr for Kozhikode airport development
  • Rs. 250 cr Thiruvananthapuram package
  • Rs. 62 cr for Kinfra Park
  • Rs. 20 cr for modernisation of Sitaram Mills
  • Rs. 5 cr for Kochi-Coimbatore industrial corridor
  • Rs. 20 cr for Horticorp for vegetable distribution
  • Rs. 100 cr to control price rise
  • 10 new forest stations would be set up
  • 40 lakh families will be recognised as BPL families
  • Two new highways have been given approval
  • 10 highways will be modernised
  • Central help has been reduced
  • Mineral Research Institute at KMMl campus
  • Vizhinjam terminal would be completed in two phases; Rs 150 cr for first phase
